Fettes College

Fettes is nicknamed ‘the Eton of the north’, and it’s easy to see why. Scotland’s top (and most expensive) public school has a rep for producing judges, diplomats, politicians and even fictional super-spies (James Bond spent his schooldays up here in the Edinburgh suburbs); academics are strong and rugby is practically a religion. In 2021, the school celebrated its 150th birthday. Founded as a school for orphans and children in need, it began with just a handful of pupils. Fettes is committed to broadening access by offering means-tested bursaries to pupils entering Year 7 or above. These can cover up to 100 per cent of fees, depending on the financial circumstances of applicants, and a thorough review of a family’s financial circumstances will take place to include income, savings, investments and realisable assets. As bursary funds are limited, priority will be given to those likely to gain the most from the educational provision at Fettes. In Scotland, schools are not permitted to link scholarships to bursaries, and therefore the two remain completely separate.
