What is schooling like in Thailand?
Thailand schools are characterised by a 12-year education system, comprising six years of primary education and six years of secondary education. The quality of schooling in Thailand can vary widely depending on factors such as location, socioeconomic status, and the specific school in question. Some Thailand schools, particularly in urban areas and private institutions, offer high-quality education with modern facilities and a strong focus on English language skills. However, rural areas and less affluent schools may face resource constraints and lower educational standards.

How long is a school day in Thailand?
A typical Thailand school day varies in duration depending on the level of education. For primary and secondary schools, classes typically begin around 8am and end at 4pm, with a one-hour lunch break in between. However, this schedule may vary between schools and regions. Additionally, some schools may have half-day sessions, especially for younger students. Higher education institutions like universities and colleges often have more flexible schedules, with classes both in the morning and late afternoon, allowing students to choose their course timings based on availability and preferences. In International schools in Thailand, the school day is typically shorter than in Thai public schools, with classes often ending in the early afternoon between 2-3.30pm. International schools in Thailand may also follow a different academic calendar with longer breaks for holidays, typically aligning with international standards or the curriculum they offer.

Are pupils taught in English at schools in Thailand?
Public schools in Thailand teach in Thai, but some Thai public schools may offer English language classes as part of their curriculum. Many international schools in Thailand offer teaching in English or other foreign languages, depending on their curriculum.

What curriculum is taught in Thailand schools?
In Thailand public schools, the curriculum is known as the Thai National Curriculum. This curriculum was established and is regulated by the Thai Ministry of Education and is taught in the Thai language. At international schools in Thailand, the curriculum can vary widely based on the school. Many international schools offer curricula such as the International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), or other globally recognised programmes.

Do Thailand schools give out homework?
Yes, homework is a common feature in Thailand’s schools, both in public and private institutions. The amount of homework can vary depending on the grade the student is in and the school policies. In primary and secondary Thailand schools, students often have daily homework assignments, while in higher education levels, it may involve more substantial projects and research tasks.

Do Thailand schools have a uniform?
Uniforms are a common requirement in Thailand schools. Public, private, and international schools in Thailand typically have a uniform policy that students are required to adhere to. These uniforms vary in style and colour depending on the school. In addition to the standard uniforms, some Thailand schools will have separate uniforms for physical education classes or special occasions.

Extracurricular activities in Thailand schools
Extracurricular activities play a significant role in all Thailand schools. These activities encompass a wide range of options, including sports, arts, music, dance, drama, and academic clubs. Many schools encourage students to take part to develop their talents, leadership skills, and teamwork abilities. Sports like football, badminton, and traditional Thai sports are particularly popular, and competitive inter-school tournaments are common at all ages.
