Switzerland school’s curriculum
Switzerland’s school curriculum is a blend of subjects, from languages and sciences to humanities and arts. Known for its adaptability, the curriculum may vary by region or school, accommodating local preferences. Schools ensure that the educational system they follow has a strong structure and clear objectives. There is no national curriculum in Switzerland, however the International Baccalaureate (IB) is widely followed (although this is not available in public schools). All students must take maths, English and science however they can choose which level and what science.

In addition to the traditional academic curriculums, students all undergo an additional class known as “The Theory of Knowledge” (TOK) which works around understanding how we come to know what we know. Each student is required to dedicate 50 hours to creativity, action, and service along with a 4000-word essay for the class.

Are schools in Switzerland free?
International and private schools in Switzerland unfortunately come with a fee, but public schools tend to be free. However, it is worth noting that while public education is largely tuition-free, there may be incidental fees related to materials and activities. International schools in Switzerland offer an alternative avenue and whilst many are fee-charging institutions, there are an array of options to help plan for school fees. You can find out more information about this in our blog about Switzerland’s schooling system.

How long is the summer break in Switzerland schools?
The summer break in Switzerland schools typically runs from mid-July to mid-August. It’s worth noting, however, that exact dates may vary depending on the school's location. Other Switzerland school holidays include an autumnal holiday, a Christmas holiday, a holiday in February, and an Easter holiday.

Do Switzerland schools have homework?
Homework is indeed a component of the schooling journey in Switzerland. Students can expect a moderate amount of homework assigned by their teachers, designed to reinforce classroom learning and encourage independent exploration. The nature and extent of homework may vary based on the year group, grade level, subject, and independent teaching approach.

Do Switzerland schools have uniforms?
Switzerland schools typically have a relaxed stance when it comes to uniforms. Unlike some educational systems, the Swiss approach places a premium on individual expression and personal comfort. As a result, uniforms are not a common feature within Switzerland schools, allowing students the freedom to express their unique identities. However, some international schools may adopt a dress code that reflects their unique ethos or values.

The admissions process for Switzerland schools
Typically, it begins with an application, and some schools may then require entrance exams or assessments to gauge potential which could then be followed by a personal interview. For international schools in Switzerland, language proficiency assessments could play a role, ensuring students can fully engage with the curriculum (it’s worth noting that the IB diploma can be completed entirely in French or English or as a bilingual certification). Admissions teams carefully evaluate each application, seeking candidates who align with the school’s unique values – so do look up each school’s mission and ethos to reflect this in your application process.
