Chetham's School of Music - Lower School

A school for the musically gifted, Chetham’s is unique in its offering of gold-standard music tuition alongside a full academic curriculum. Small in numbers (around 330 pupils), the bijou central Manchester site has a history that goes back hundreds of years, with medieval buildings cheek by jowl with acoustically perfect concert halls. A musical oasis amidst the bustle of the north-west metropolis, this is a school alive with happy chatter and, of course, the sound of (exceptionally good) music. Slap-bang in the centre of Manchester, Chetham’s is easily accessible by train and ...

    Bursaries
To ensure their financial situation is not a consideration in the selection process, students are means-tested once they have been offered a place. This open-entry policy ensures the school is fully equitable and engages talented young musicians from all backgrounds. The Bursary Fund subsidises places for students who are not eligible for funding from the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme (MDS) and relies on the generous donations from supporters and funders. The school also assists students through a hardship fund to acquire instruments and take part in a full programme of enrichment including performance and exchange opportunities.

If annual household income is below £20k, students receive a full bursary. There is a sliding scale up from this point. Means-tested bursaries use government funding from the Music and Dance Scheme to students who have lived in the UK for at least three years and whose family income is less than £190,000 per year.

The school's Ukrainian Bursary Fund supports young musicians who are displaced due to the war in Ukraine.
