For this term’s first instalment of View from the Top, we’ve handed over to James Kidd, the new principal of DLD College London. Below, Mr Kidd gets on his soapbox to sing the praises of BTECs, and explain why parents and schools need to change their perception of these hands-on academic qualifications...
When it comes to education, it is important to recognise that one size doesn’t fit all. All students will have different abilities, strengths and aspirations. While some students thrive in academic environments driven by exams, others excel in more practical, hands-on learning experiences. Our goal at DLD College London is to ensure that we put our students on an academic path that gets the best out of them so they can reach their full potential. That’s why we’re proud to be one of the few independent schools in the country that offer BTECs as an academic pathway to success. BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) qualifications offer an alternative pathway to success, blending academic knowledge with real-world skills.
Practical learning, real-world skills
One of the most distinctive features of BTECs is their practical approach to learning. Rather than focusing solely on exams, BTEC students are assessed through coursework, projects, and practical assignments. This allows them to apply what they’ve learned to real-world scenarios, preparing them for the workplace. Whether you're studying business, engineering, or media, BTECs equip students with the tools they need to excel in their chosen field. This year we had a student who secured a coveted apprenticeship in the healthcare industry at Unilever demonstrating the value employers place on the quality of BTEC qualifications.
Flexibility in learning
BTECs cater to a wide range of learners. This flexibility means students can start at a level that suits them and can progress at their own pace. BTECs can also be studied alongside traditional academic qualifications like A-levels, giving students the opportunity to broaden their skill set and keep their future options open.
University and career ready
Contrary to the misconception that BTECs limit options, many universities accept BTEC qualifications for entry into degree courses. In fact, BTECs provide a strong foundation for students who want to pursue higher education, particularly in vocational subjects. Additionally, employers highly value BTECs because they emphasise the development of job-specific skills, making BTEC graduates workplace-ready from day one. We’ve had multiple BTEC students’ progress onto study at Russell Group universities which again highlights the esteem in which these courses are held by leading academic institutions!
An inclusive route to success
BTECs offer an inclusive educational route for students with different learning styles and strengths. For those who may struggle with the pressure of exams, BTECs provide an alternative way to demonstrate their abilities. By emphasising ongoing assessment and real-world application, BTECs give every student the chance to showcase their strengths and achieve success in a format that works for them. DLD is a non-selective, co-educational school that embraces diversity – both in terms of background but also thought and ability. Our award-winning pastoral care supports students to do their very best in their chosen academic path and our BTEC courses play an important role in this.
Building confidence and independence
Through independent projects and practical assessments, BTEC students learn to manage their time, work collaboratively, and take ownership of their learning. This builds confidence and helps develop essential skills like problem-solving, communication, and teamwork – skills that are invaluable in both higher education and the workplace.
I believe there needs to be a dial change with regard to the perception of BTECs. There are numerous examples at DLD and I’m sure from other schools of genuine success stories and it is perhaps a disservice to students that aren’t given this option to succeed because of traditional views. BTECs are a valuable and respected qualification that opens doors to a range of opportunities, whether that’s further study or entering the workforce. They are particularly well-suited to students who thrive in practical learning environments and want to develop real-world skills. With BTECs, students are not just learning for exams; they’re preparing for life. Whether you're looking to pursue higher education or jump straight into a career, BTECs offer a flexible, dynamic, and future-focused pathway to success.
