Mowden Hall School

The sterling reputation of this co-ed Northumberland day and boarding prep precedes it and, as a result, boys and girls flock here from as far away as North Yorkshire and Scotland. It’s partly down to the impressive stats – 30 per cent of pupils won senior scholarships in 2019 and popular leaver destinations include Oundle and Shrewsbury – but also the fact that this is a traditional school with lots going on for curious, well-rounded characters. Once a week the whole school troops across to St James’ Church in the village of Newton for a service and afterwards, pupils take it in turns to ring the bells – a meditative moment to begin the day. Neal Bailey left in July 2020 to become head of Pinewood School; former deputy Kate Martin takes his place....

Bursaries at Mowden Hall are overseen by its membership of the Cothill Trust, which offers students entering in Year 5 or above up to 100 per cent means-tested fee remission. The process requires a full financial review of a family’s income, expenses, assets and liabilities, together with a home visit that is undertaken by a third party on behalf of the school. The key determining factor in the decision to award a bursary is need.

The school also offers a flat fee reduction of 20 per cent to serving members of the armed forces who are in receipt of CEA. For more information as well as a link to its bursary policy and how to apply, please see its website:
