Our View

The dual-language English-Mandarin programme at DUCKS – the Early Years section of Dulwich College (Singapore) which takes toddlers to Year 2 – is exceptional. Every class has a laoshi (Chinese teacher) and so the children really learn to integrate Mandarin into their daily lives. The approach focuses on children becoming confident and competent in both languages and parents love it. In charge is head Sarah Conrad, a Durham University graduate, who taught in Singapore in the 1990s, before moving back to the UK. She was the Director of Prep Education for the Effingham Schools Trust before joining the Singapore team in 2024.

The purpose-built building is a lovely nurturing environment with a popular rooftop bike track and butterfly garden. Little ones aged two to five are based on the ground floor and learn through purposeful play and the EYFS framework; Key Stage 1 children (ages five to seven) are on the upper two floors and follow an enhanced version of the English National Curriculum. Swimming lessons are on site; specialist PE and music lessons from age five; forest school (this was the first among the international cohort here to offer it) encourages children to think outside the box and problem-solve in an unfamiliar environment while still being within the safe confines of the school. Pastoral care is strong and children themselves are encouraged to think about others - a Year 2 student counsellor programme is in place. DUCKS children are included in the school’s house system from the get-go and as they move up, they have the chance to become house captains and join the student council; the eco-warrior job is one of the most sought after. Families all tell us that this is a wonderful start to their child’s school days - and we can see why.

  • Admissions

Dulwich College (Singapore) welcomes children as young as 2 years old into the Toddler programme, which offers 32 places. An additional 64 places are available respectively in Nursery and Reception with each new intake. Beyond these entry levels, place availability depends solely on withdrawals. Families are therefore encouraged to apply early for the Nursery or Reception intakes. English is the primary language of instruction, and to ensure all students receive the necessary support, the school assesses the English proficiency of non-native speakers. This process is supplemented by school records, references, reports, and diagnostic testing if necessary. Additionally, it is important that at least one parent is a fluent or native English speaker to ensure clear and effective communication between the College and home. The College has two application submission deadlines: October and March. They do not maintain a waitlist, and each applicant is given equal consideration during the admissions cycle based on the strength of their application, provided they meet the deadlines and entry criteria. If an applicant is not offered a place during the first round of admissions, they will remain in the applicant pool and receive a decision in the second round. Possible outcomes include: 1) an offer of a place, 2) confirmation of a successful application but with placement rolled over to the next academic year due to current unavailability, or 3) an unsuccessful application. Applicants in the second category may receive an offer if a place becomes available during the interim period. Once year groups are full, place availability is typically dependent on withdrawals, but families can secure a guaranteed spot through Guaranteed Placement Rights (GPR), which allows prioritisation for one child’s entry in exchange for a financial contribution that supports the Alleynian Scholarship Programme.
