Bedales School
From its very beginnings, Bedales has had a reputation as a radical sort of place. Founded in the late 19th-century in reaction to the regimented, over-regulated education system of the day, it remains an ahead-of-the-curve, non-selective co-ed for children who thrive on getting stuck in. And, at a time when the importance of hands-on, Good Life-style skills is coming back to the fore, the emphasis on outdoor work (Bedales has a farm, pupils keep bees and learn about traditional crafts such as blacksmithing) feels spot-on.
Academically, the school offers a pioneering, progressive combination of GCSEs, IGCSEs and its own (UCAS-recognised) Bedales Assessed Courses in subjects such as global awareness and digital game design – something that has proved to be a huge success.
Music, art and drama are all outstanding, from the infamous annual Bedales rock show to the talented potters and painters who work in the inspiring, RIBA award-winning art and design building. Head Magnus Bashaarat joined in 2018 and has continued to champion a creative, out-of-the-box approach to education.
It’s informal – no uniforms, teachers are addressed by their first names – and certainly not suited to everyone. But for self-starters who relish having space to think for themselves, this is a brilliant left-field option....

Bursaries
Bedales offers fee support of up to 100 per cent, with the potential for further support for additional costs, to families who would not otherwise be able to afford them. While the school does not require pupils to already qualify for a scholarship award to be eligible for a bursary, they do note that since the available funds are limited and the school wishes to enable pupils with particularly strong talents the chance to attend, a number of bursary beneficiaries are also scholars.
