Ampleforth College

It has been a rocky few years for North Yorkshire’s Ampleforth College – not least a 2019 inspection that found it was failing to meet child-protection standards. The good news is that it looks as though the tide has turned. Head Robin Dyer, previously second master and operational head at Wellington College, was brought in (along with a new director of safeguarding and a new dean) to steady the ship and lead a drive to reinvigorate all aspects of the school. ‘Forward-thinking and dynamic, he provides strong leadership and direction,’ says one parent approvingly. All bursary applications have to show that financial assistance with the payment of fees is needed. New bursary applications are considered each year and decisions are usually made in March for students entering the school in the following September. It may be possible to give very general indications in advance, but these cannot be taken as assurances. Once awarded each bursary is reviewed on an annual basis and parents are notified of the value of the award for the next academic year.
