The Horizon Looks Bright at Saint Felix School

During a period of considerable change, a series of transformative initiatives aimed at enhancing the educational experience and prospects of its students is taking place at Saint Felix School in Southwold.

These improvements, encompassing an innovative new curriculum, an expanded co-curricular provision and upgraded facilities, emphasise Saint Felix School's commitment to providing its students with a holistic educational experience.

Central to the school's evolution is a pioneering new curriculum that affords students more options for their educational journey. In contrast to the conventional 9 to 10GCSEs, starting this academic year, Saint Felix students can choose to focus on 6 to 8 GCSEs, aligning their studies with their passions and career aspirations. This flexible approach ensures that each student receives personalised support and can excel in their chosen areas.

In addition to academic enhancements, Saint Felix School has significantly expanded its co-curricular provision. Students now have the opportunity to participate in diverse activities such as golf, archery, equestrianism, surfing, Duke of Edinburgh, Triathlon, and much more. These activities are integrated into the weekly schedule, with three dedicated sessions for co-curricular pursuits, including community service initiatives that enrich learning beyond the classroom.

Further enriching the educational experience is the introduction of the Saint Felix Diploma, a comprehensive programme designed to broaden each student's horizons, incorporating both core and optional modules, ranging from arts and sciences to practical skills like coding and car maintenance. In addition, the diploma includes a robust careers and higher education programme, preparing students effectively for life beyond school.

With evidence showing that children benefit from having a constant and positive adult mentor in their lives, Saint Felix School has implemented a mentoring programme for students in years 7 to 13. Each student is paired with a mentor who provides academic and pastoral support, ensuring every individual can navigate their unique educational journey successfully whilst improving personal growth, resilience and wellbeing.

Over the summer, extensive renovations have modernised the school facilities, which will continue as part of a 10-year development plan. These enhancements include upgraded classrooms and learning spaces that create a stimulating environment for learning and innovation. Saint Felix is also transitioning to become a Microsoft Showcase School, equipping all staff and classrooms with Microsoft devices to enrich teaching and learning experiences.

Mr Matthew Oakman, Head of Saint Felix, expressed excitement about these developments, emphasising Saint Felix School's commitment to providing a forward-thinking education that prepares students for success in an evolving world. 'Our goal is to nurture well-rounded individuals who are not only academically proficient but also equipped with the skills and values needed to make a positive impact.'
