King's College School Wimbledon Pupil Editors: 'The Summer Term'

Earlier this term, we set our pupil editors their latest commission: to capture – through words, photography or film – what makes the summer term so great.

Over the next few weeks, we'll reveal the results. This week, it's the turn of Oliver and Max from King's College School, Wimbledon...

'The Summer Term', by Oliver, Year 7

So far this year, there have been a variety of different highlights in both academic and co-curricular subjects. From House competitions to online charity events, the past two terms have been both exciting and inspiring experiences, capable of stimulating students even through the remote period. As the last term of the academic year, the summer is often credited as the most exciting and eventful, and despite current circumstances, this year appears to be no exception.

In particular, one of the most interesting developments during the summer at King’s this year is the availability of inter-school fixtures in both cricket and tennis. Having been playing matches against one another so far, for many of us this is our first ever opportunity, and it’s great to finally be able to compete against other teams and socialise with other peers for a change. Some future participation dates include matches against Emanuel School, Epsom College, Wimbledon College and many more. We will also be able to participate in the “Captain Tom 100 Challenge” where pupils challenge themselves to 100 repetitions of a certain activity in order to donate to mental health charities that have become a key force during the pandemic. House competitions available include: the summer cross country to raise money for charity, the great summer quiz, house frisbee and house swimming.

As well as this, swimming has been translated into the popular summer water sport ‘water polo’  which is a great way for many of us to try our hand at a new experience entirely, and an excellent change from the old routine. In the coming term we may also hopefully be able to renew fixtures in this field which is a very exciting prospect that I’m looking forward to.

For our other co-curricular subjects, participants in the year 7 drama clubs will be holding a live production edition of the popular Greek and Norse myths: Ragnarok and the Minotaur in our devised work. This term we are exploring dynamic ensemble storytelling and physical theatre in our performance which ties in well with our theme, and also collaborating with our fellow Year 8’s Technical Theatre club, to create atmospheric lighting and bring the story to life. 

Musically for the lower school, the Cambiata choir will have the opportunity to perform in the senior school summer concert, our first live performance of the year and round off the end of the term on a high. There is also a lower school concerto for soloist performers in June, and the long – awaited house music finals.

This term I look forward to experiencing as many new challenges and opportunities as possible and I feel that there is no better place to experience the summer term than at King’s.
