Cheam School achieves most scholarships awarded in its 380 year history

As the 2025-26 academic year draws to a close, Cheam School in Headley is celebrating a record-breaking year after pupils were awarded a total of 25 scholarships, 7 of which were for academic achievement – the highest in the school’s recorded 380-year history. Notably, 40% of the current Year 8 cohort secured a scholarship, setting a new benchmark for achievement.



Proudly non-selective, Cheam continues to prepare pupils for entry to some of the most prestigious senior schools in the country. This year, pupils will progress to 19 different senior schools, including Bradfield College, Eton College, Downe House, Marlborough College, St Mary’s Calne, Wellington College and Winchester College.

This success coincides with an exciting chapter for the school, marking Nick Milbank’s first full academic year as Headmaster.

Reflecting on the pupils’ achievements, Mr Milbank said:

'I am incredibly proud of each and every pupil who pursued or achieved a scholarship this year. Their success reflects not only their ambition, resilience and determination, but also the dedication and expertise of our staff. I have been particularly impressed by the way our pupils celebrate not only their own achievements, but also those of their peers. It is also important to recognise that these achievements have been years in the making. For many of our pupils, this success is the culmination of a journey that began in Pre-Prep, shaped by consistent hard work, commitment and support along the way. While we will greatly miss our Year 8 leavers, we are immensely proud of the way they will represent Cheam as they move on to the next stage of their education.'

Founded in 1645, Cheam School moved to its current site in Headley in 1934 and counts King Charles III among its alumni. The school is guided by its core values of Curious Minds, Kind Hearts and Community Spirit.
