Historic MCC Day at Reigate Grammar School
Reigate Grammar School enjoyed a memorable day of cricket as it hosted both Boys’ and Girls’ MCC fixtures on the same day for the first time in the school’s history.
The matches created a wonderful atmosphere and a true celebration of cricket at RGS. Players showed outstanding effort, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the day, supported by families, friends, staff and Old Reigatians.
The occasion was made even more special by the number of MCC players who were themselves Old Reigatians. It was a pleasure to welcome them back to Reigate and to see them representing the MCC on familiar ground.
Another highlight of the day was a visit from England cricketer Jason Roy, who joined RGS students at lunchtime for an insightful Q&A session before staying to watch part of the afternoon’s cricket. Jason spoke about his journey from school cricket to the international stage, sharing valuable reflections on handling pressure, performing at the highest level and playing cricket around the world. His experiences gave RGS players a fascinating insight into the mindset and resilience required in elite sport.
On the pitch, the Girls’ fixtures produced two excellent and closely contested matches. RGS narrowly lost a high-scoring T20 by just five runs, before the MCC chased down 94 in a thrilling T10 match with only a couple of balls to spare.
The Boys’ match delivered further drama, as RGS chased down 181 with a boundary from the final ball to record the school’s first-ever victory over the MCC.
The day concluded with the Senior Cricket Presentation Evening and dinner, rounding off a superb occasion for cricket at Reigate Grammar School.
Darryl Rebbetts, Director of Cricket at Reigate Grammar School said: '
This was a very special day for RGS cricket. To host both Boys’ and Girls’ MCC fixtures on the same day for the first time was a fantastic milestone, and the atmosphere across the school was brilliant. We were delighted to welcome back so many Old Reigatians, and Jason Roy’s visit made the day even more memorable for our students. Most importantly, it was a wonderful celebration of cricket and community.'
