Our View
Founded in 1893, The Scots College is a multi-campus independent Presbyterian day and boarding school for boys, famous for combining rigorous academics with, in the middle school, a residential outdoor programme for Year 9 students. ‘Brave Hearts Bold Minds’ is the College’s philosophy of education.
Where?
The Rose Bay Early Years Centre (Scots long day care) for three to four year olds is a five minute drive from the middle school and senior school campuses in Bellevue Hill. Set in the eastern suburb of Rose Bay, the site has an outdoor play area with sandpits, climbing frames and play equipment.
In Bellevue Hill, the junior (Years 2 to 4) and senior (Years 5 and 6) prep schools are divided between two campuses. The junior prep campus is located across the road from the Early Learning Centre for Cubs (three-year-olds), Lions (four-year-olds), Kindergarten and Year 1; those in Years 5 and 6 are located across the road from the middle school and senior school. In addition, there’s the Brighton Preparatory School, for Kindergarten to Year 6 that is located a 30-minute drive from the Bellevue Hill campuses.
Head
Dr Ian PM Lambert has been principal since 2007. He oversees all aspects of College life and is closely involved with all campuses. His father was a Scots Old Boy, and his sons went to Scots as well so he knows the system from a pupil perspective too.
Admissions
Only 26 boys per day in the Rose Bay Early Years Centre, the College’s long day care. There are two types of enrolment: short term (with a refundable fee and entry to Scots Rose Bay only) and long term (non-refundable fee, which allows for enrolment into the College at Bellevue Hill, Kindergarten to Year 12).
Parents who prefer a school-based structure (8:30am to 3:15pm) can enrol in any year from Cubs (three-year-olds) to Year 12 at the Bellevue Hill campuses, or from Kindergarten to Year 6 at the brighton preparatory school.
Academics
Parents can choose between a two-, three- or five-day programme. Inspired by Reggio Emilia principles, the emphasis at the Rose Bay Early Years Centre is on adventure, growth and supporting boys’ natural curiosity to encourage a love of learning. The building blocks of numeracy and literacy are all taught through play.
There’s learning support programs for all pupils with special education needs, with adjusted activities where necessary. Rest breaks, extra time, and support with reading or writing can be accessed at all stages.
School community
Pupils come from far and wide across Greater Sydney, Australia and the rest of the world. All parents become part of The Scots College Parents’ Association when their son joins Scots. There is also a Women’s Association that focuses on raising funds to provide an additional layer of support to the boys and encourages camaraderie amongst mothers and female carers across year groups. Through these associations, there are plenty of opportunities for parents to get involved in activities around the College.
The Rose Bay Early Years Centre is aimed at working parents so is open from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, for 48 weeks of the year. Food is included in the daily fee. Across the school, the pastoral-care approach teaches boys to be kind, responsible and motivated, with teachers constantly encouraging these attitudes.
And finally....
A fantastic school with a strong early-years offering that is renowned for producing community-minded boys with integrity.
