Our View
Founded in 1893, The Scots College is a multi-campus independent Presbyterian day and boarding school for boys, famous for combining rigorous academics with, in the middle school, a residential outdoor programme for Year 9 students. ‘Brave Hearts Bold Minds’ is the College’s philosophy of education.
Where?
The Brighton Preparatory School, for Kindergarten to Year 6, is located at Dolls Point, a 30-minute drive from the Bellevue Hill campuses.
In Bellevue Hill, the junior (Years 2 to 4) and senior (Years 5 and 6) prep schools are divided between two campuses. The juniors are located across the road from the Early Learning Centre for Cubs (three-year-olds), Lions (four-year-olds), Kindergarten and Year 1; those in the upper years (Years 5 and 6) are located across the road from the middle school and senior school campuses. In addition, there’s the Rose Bay Early Years Centre for three- to four-year-olds.
Head
Dr Ian PM Lambert has been principal since 2007. He oversees all aspects of College life and is closely involved with all campuses. His father was a Scots Old Boy, and his sons went to Scots as well so he knows the system from a pupil perspective too.
Admissions
The designated entry point at the Brighton Preparatory School is Kindergarten. The pre-enrolment process begins two years before entry. All years from Transition to Year 11 have an interview with the head of campus.
If space is available, parents can enrol in any year from Cubs (three-year-olds) to Year 12 at the Bellevue Hill campuses, or from Kindergarten to Year 6 at the brighton preparatory school.
Academics
Scots' Kindergarten to Year 12 curriculum follows the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) which covers the eight key learning areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Technologies, Human Society and its Environment, Creative Arts, Personal Development Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) and Languages.
There’s learning support programs for all pupils with special education needs, who are taught in mainstream classes with adjusted activities and assessments where necessary from the learning enrichment department. Rest breaks, extra time, and support with reading or writing can be accessed at all stages.
Co-curricular
Boys have access to specialist tuition in a range of subjects such as art, dance, drama, music and sport. The school has also partnered with local associations and clubs, such as the Georges River Sailing Club, to offer some extracurricular activities.
School community
Brighton Preparatory School was set up to attract families from the Sutherland Shire so the majority come from St George and Sutherland Shire. Parents can dip in as much or little as they want. There are plenty of opportunities to help out, from running the sausage sizzle at the brighton preparatory school’s weekend sport matches to volunteering in the canteen. There’s also a Women’s Association, which organises coffee mornings and lunches for mums.
Across the school, the pastoral-care approach teaches boys to be kind, responsible and motivated, with teachers encouraging these attitudes.
And finally....
A fantastic school with a strong academic focus that is renowned for producing community-minded boys with integrity.
