Lovely Pippa Page-Roberts heads Putney High Junior School, and parents tell us ‘we couldn’t ask for anyone nicer, harder-working or more competent’. Housed in a bright, standalone building that’s very much part of the main campus, junior girls start the (vastly oversubscribed) Putney journey at 4+. Most tend to be very local, with great wraparound care in place to support busy working parents.
Independent thinking and confidence are instilled from the get-go; this chatty, articulate lot are totally unfazed by poetry recitals, public-speaking competitions and singing their hearts out in the choir (there’s a strong musical streak here). Technology and iPads abound but handwriting is very big too (‘Even more important than art,’ a little one very sweetly told us). A solid academic grounding helps girls gear up for the fast-paced senior school, the transition to which is made as smooth as possible (places are secured in Year 5). Only a few head elsewhere, usually to boarding school....
