Moor Park School

Our view

‘Not every child can be good at everything but every child can be good at something,’ says Moor Park’s enthusiastic head Charlie Minogue. Small triumphs – a tricky football tackle, nailing a nerve-racking musical performance – are just as celebrated as the impressive number of scholarships to heavyweight senior schools that are won by leavers each year.

There is a sense of kindness that filters down from the top at this rural day and boarding co-ed, with Year 8 escorting pre-prep little ones to the classroom for morning lessons and Year 6 exchanging e-mail letters with pupils at Moor Park’s twin: DIL Mehran School in Karachi.

The setting is 85 acres of Shropshire countryside, which means a conker-fights club, plus orienteering, outdoor assault courses and bushcraft skills as part of optional Saturday Smash activities. There are plenty of chances for aspiring performers to take to the stage – the chapel choir is in demand at the local BBC radio station and actors can take part in the annual Hereford Performing Arts Festival – and the school is packed with all the sports facilities young players could want.

Children pack their bags for camping trips or for a week in France. Sustainability is on the agenda too: there is a biomass boiler; junior boarding house the Tree House is eco-certified; and locally sourced food is on the menu. Non-selective and with a broad intake and strong academic record, this is a prep where every pupil has the chance to excel.
