Taunton School 2024 cricket season scores early success as student becomes youngest selected for elite women’s training squad and girls team picks up county trophy.
A Year 8 Taunton School sports scholarship student has been awarded a place on the
Somerset Emerging Players Programme.
Megan, who is 12-years-old, has become the youngest player by four years to join the coveted county cricket pathway. She is the latest Taunton School student to join the County Academy.
Pete Sanderson, Taunton School Director of Cricket, said: “We are delighted for Megan – her success is well-deserved and reflects the hard work and dedication that she and all our players, both girls and boys, give to the sport here at Taunton School.”
The news comes as the school’s U15 girls team celebrate winning the county Lady Taverners indoor cricket final.“Girls’ cricket is going from strength to strength at Taunton School,” said Mr Sanderson. “Our strong cricketing heritage and our top team of coaches means that everyone has the opportunity to play the game and everyone – whatever their level - has a chance to find their exceptional.”
The Cricketer’s Schools Guide 2024 named Taunton School as one of the top 100 cricketing schools in the country and Taunton Prep was placed in the top 50. Taunton School is one of only a handful of schools to have both senior and prep schools mentioned.
Alongside the girls’ successes, five other Taunton School players went through months of rigorous training before joining of the Somerset County U15 side on a tour to Sri Lanka last month.
All pupils at Taunton School are introduced to cricket and have many opportunities to progress in the sport, working with school’s coaching team which includes former England player Marcus Trescothick.
In January, Taunton School renewed its official player sponsorship deal of former student Tom Abell – captain of the Somerset County Cricket team from 2017 to November 2023 – for the 2024 season.
