A Trip back to the Tudor Era
Years 3 – 6 from Horris Hill School enjoyed a true adventure on 23rd November, with a trip to
Portsmouth’s award-winning The Mary Rose Museum.
In a day packed with activity and learning, pupils took part in cannon drills and fact-finding workshop activities with replica artefacts. They discovered that crews of ships like The Mary Rose were often an international mix of sailors, as well as learning about the games they played, and even the ship’s dog. Some students had the chance to meet ‘Henry VIII’ himself!
A fascinating window into day to day life in the past, the visit supported their history education, as well as encouraging curiosity and teamwork – two key traits in the school’s ethos of family, freedom and flair.
Haroon Cockar, Head of Art and Design Technology and the organiser of the trip said: “It was a great day out where years 3, 4, 5 and 6 got to see a piece of history from 500 years ago. A completely emissive experience, where they got to smell the odours from the ship, see how it was raised from the sea in the 4D cinema and learn how to load a cannon from the ship. It was an amazing day that left all students with a thirst for more and coming away with loads of experiences that will last a lifetime.”
The children returned to school tired, but happy and inspired, with much to take forward and talk about in their classes in the days following.
