Hazlegrove Prep School unveils its new Outdoor Classroom

New Outdoor Classroom offers school exciting teaching opportunities in the great outdoors.

There was much excitement at Hazlegrove this week as the new Outdoor Classroom was unveiled. Positioned by the go-karting track, the new teaching space promises to be a wonderful resource and lends itself to all sorts of activities.

Mr Tom Birch who runs the Outdoor Education programme at Hazlegrove said, 'Our fantastic new Outdoor Classroom is now finished and ready to use! This tremendous outdoor space offers so many opportunities for the children whether for Drama and performance poetry, nature writing and sketching, making music and singing, or a lovely alternative space for reading, tutor time or PHSE and Circle time, not to mention its use for clubs and activities for our lovely boarders! It is very sheltered so even in poor weather it can be well used'.

The classroom is the latest addition in a programme of growth for the School following the recent refurbishment of the Junior Boys' Boarding House as well as major make-overs for the dining room and sports hall. Outdoor Education at Hazlegrove is a very seasonal affair. From making paper boats to sail in puddles on rainy days, to hunting for insects and butterflies in the summer sunshine, the school always make the most of the weather and enjoys the elements. Outdoor Education is part of the curriculum for all pupils and older pupils enjoy residential trips which build on the skills they have learnt and pupils in Years 7 and 8 have the opportunity to participate in the Exmoor Challenge.

Headmaster, Ed Benbow said, ‘ This classroom is such a wonderful addition to our facilities and has been generously funded by the Hazlegrove Friends. We are greatly looking forward to showing the Hazlegrove Community how much fun we are having putting it to good use. We believe in really making the most of our fantastic surroundings here, and aim to foster a love of the great outdoors in all of our pupils. It is always so worthwhile and a lot of fun to boot!’.

A new pathway, as well as lighting, are in the future plans for the classroom so watch this space…
